Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
