The Trump movement's most revealing and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek toé˘ č¦† the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly not the story of a mighty king arising; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message is about love for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you must offer them your pullover too.
The evident and direct fact that the Savior of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity something of a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Highest of Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities of American history.

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both meekness and belief, a mixture that committed national faithful should embrace.
