Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
